Hue Ancient Capital and its secrets

1. Location – Hue ancient capital

Hue ancient capital is located along two sides of both Huong River and a lot of adjacent areas to be of Thua Thien Hue province. Moreover, the city is both a cultural, economic and political centre and an ancient capital under feudal period of Nguyen King in Vietnam, from 1802 to 1945.

2. History

To start with, after a marriage between Huyen Tran Princess (a daughter of Tran King) and Che Man (Cham King), Chau O area and Chau Ly area ( including Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and a part of North Quang Nam at present) were named as Thuan Hoa from 1306.

In the late middle of fithteen  century, Le Thanh Tong King period, Hue appeared firstly (?). Specially, Palace of Nguyen Lord was located at Kim Long (Hue) in 1636, then in 1687 moved to Phu Xuan – Noi Hue citadel at present.

In the first years of eighteen century, Phu Xuan was  a political, economic and cultural centre of homeland “Dang Trong”. Phu Xuan became capital of Tay Son dynasty From 1788 to 1801.

From 1802 to 1945, Hue was the capital of Vietnam – an united country under the reign of 13 Nguyen Kings.

 3. Cultural values

Firstly, On the North side of Huong river, the architecture system expressing the power of statism (Nguyen reign) consists of 3 fortified buildings: Hue Citadel, Hue Imperial City, and Purple Forbidden City.

Secondly, the citadel system combines between East and West architectures. Moreover, the buildings placed in the natural sight make people implicit the surrounding places as a part of the Hue Citadel. Particularly, that places are Ngu Binh mountain, Huong Giang river, Gia Vien hillock, Boc Thanh hillock….

Dai Noi Hue

Besides, Meridian Gate is also a supreme administration area with 4 gateways. Moving back inside the Hue Imperial City a bit, it is the Purple Forbidden City. Certainly, the city is a place for the royal family to live at that time.
